Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Transgenic Canola. Nitrogen fertilizers are used universally in agriculture to improve crop yield. However, nitrogen is one of the most costly agricultural inputs in terms of its expense to the farmer and its negative environmental impact. While plants need nitrogen, it is poorly assimilated. As much as 50% of crop-applied nitrogen is lost to processes such as leaching and volatilization, contributing to environmental pollution. Engineering plants to be more N efficient decreases both a farmer’s cost and the environmental impact of nitrogen applications. We have demonstrated increased nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in canola expressing alanine aminotransferase, a naturally occurring enzyme downstream in the nitrogen assimilation pathway. Field trials over more than seven seasons consistently show NUE canola to yield amounts equivalent to controls, with as much as 50% less nitrogen fertilizer applied. Studies are underway to determine the mode of action of the alanine aminotransferase transgene in NUE canola. Field data and preliminary molecular analysis will be shown.
