Minority Affairs Symposium - Plants and Human Nutrition

Gilbert, Marcella [1].

Northern Plains Tribes Gain Understanding of Diabetes.

The native population of North America suffers from high levels of diabetes, obesity, and all the diseases that go along with these health conditions. To gain a better understanding of why this population has such a high level of diabetes and obesity, another look into the historical lifeways and diet of the native North American tribes is necessary.
This presentation will take a brief, simple, and logical observation of the effects of genocide and colonialism on traditional relationships and thoughts focusing on food changes and forced diets.
