Plant-Pathogen Interactions Ceron, Abel [1], Vargas-Arispuro, Irasema [2], Romo, Gabriela [1], Islas, Maria [1], Labavitch, John [3], Martinez-Tellez, Miguel [4]. Peach polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein (PGIP) effects against endo-polygalacturonase from A. niger and R. stolonifer. Peach crops are under the attack of many phytopathogenic fungi during their development and ripening. Fungi use endo-polygalacturonases to degrade plant tissue and be able to penetrate the cells. Crude extracts of PGIP’s were prepared from leaves and mesocarp of peach at different development stages (20, 40 and 80 days after bloom). PGIPs were induced or not by salicylic acid treatment of the peaches. Protein bands of 32 and 40 KDa were the most abundant for mesocarp and leaves, respectively. The PGIP crude extracts were In vitro assayed against A. niger and R. stolonifer endo-polygalacturonases. PGIP peach crude extracts at concentration of 100 µg.mL-1 reduced fungi endo-polygalacturonase activity about 70 %. A. niger endo-polygalacturonase activity was inhibited more efficiently (P>0.05%) by the mesocarp PGIP extract obtained from peaches at 80 days after bloom and treated with salicylic acid. While endo-polygalacturonase from R. stolonifer was inhibited more efficiently by crude extract of mesocarp PGIP obtained from peaches at 20 days after bloom and treated with salicylic acid. These results show that the PGIPs in peach are induced by the salicylic acid treatment and they could reduced the susceptibility of peaches to A. niger and R. stolonifer.
