Evolution of Flower Development: from Phenotypes to Genes

Dissecting legume petal identities: new insights from Lotus and the Loteae.

Papilionoid leguminous flowers contain three different petal types distinguished by functional, morphological and micromorphological features. Recent work has elucidated the major identity gene (legCYC2) controlling the specification of the adaxial (standard or flag) petal. Unusual floral morphologies can result from the expansion of contraction of petal identity domains. Work is now progressing towards understanding the identity genes responsible for lateral (wing) and abaxial identity (keel), mainly using the model legume Lotus japonicus. However, the tribe Loteae offers a variety of interesting floral types which have been used in a comparative study of petal identity.
