Plant-Fungal Interactions

Plant defense against fungal pathogens.

As a group, fungi and oomyctes represent some of the most important plant pathogens. However, the fact that plants express resistance against the majority of pathogens indicates that effective defense mechanisms are present in all plants. One form of defense can be expressed as either preformed chemical or structural barriers which provide passive protection against infection. In addition, defenses can be also induced as a result of the interaction of the plant with a pathogen. The expression of induced defense responses can be either localized to the site of infection or, in some cases, be expressed throughout the plant as part of phenomena known as induced systemic resistance and systemic acquired resistance. Using several plant-fungal pathogen interactions, the putative role of cell wall alterations, reactive oxygen species, antimicrobial secondary metabolites and hydrolytic enzymes will be described. In addition, criteria that can be used to help define roles for defense associated responses in resistance will also be discussed.
