Evolution and Diversification in the Sapindales Oliveira, Pedro Dias [1], Udulutsch, Renata Giassi [2], Pirani, José R. [3]. Phylogeny of Pilocarpus Vahl (Rutaceae) and stochastic mapping of characters. In this paper we present a phylogenetic analysis of Pilocarpus - "jaborandis" and the first attempt to understand the species-level relationships within the Neotropical Rutaceae. Pilocarpus comprises 17 species and occur in a variety of vegetation types from Mexico to Argentina. We conducted our phylogenetic analysis of the genus, including all of its currently recognized species, based on 94 morphological characters and applying the Markov chain Monte Carlo method under the Bayesian paradigm. We also carried out character history simulations and developed evolutionary scenarios for leaf and corolla aestivation patterns based on posterior probabilities. The monophyly of Pilocarpus was strongly supported in all analyses with posterior probability equal to 1, and 2 major clades emerged within the genus: (1) the simple-leaved clade, including the species with simple leaves plus P. pauciflorus (species with “unifoliolate” leaves); and (2) the compound-leaved clade (except P. microphyllus). Furthermore, more than 75% of the nodes had posterior probability > 0.75. Character histories simulations showed that (1) unifoliolate leaves would have arisen from simple leaves, and these from compound ones; (2) the proximal-cochleate imbricate corolla would have been the pattern present at the most basal node of the genus, and all other variations would have diversified within Pilocarpus. In addition, we reinforced the perspective of considering synapomorphy as a matter of probability. Log in to add this item to your schedule
