A Symposium in Honor of Sherwin Carlquist Schneider, Edward [1]. The functional and adaptational value of a business card. The professional career of Sherwin Carlquist has spanned in excess of five decades. His continued commitment to the advancement of plant biology remains as strong today as in his early days. His observation of the similarity in the resinous scent of Haleakala silverswords with the California tarweeds began a long career of comparative methodologies for plant anatomy. His journey resulted in setting new standards and ways of interpretation in a wide ranges of areas including: Life on Islands, ecological plant anatomy, paedomorphosis in wood, raylessness, vessel grouping, vasicentric tracheids, tracheid dimorphism, comparative wood anatomy, primitive woods, gnetalian phylogeny, successive cambia, bordered pits on ray cells, the demise of vascular conservatism, and secondary woodiness. These remarkable and productive outcomes while continuingly shaping his vision and interpretation, did not change his core beliefs: 1) that all too often, graduate students work to please an advisor, and all too often, advisors give detailed direction to graduate students – and therefore, graduate students should make there own decisions in science; 2) have a willingness to differ from others and exercise individualism; 3) be a risk-taker, an endeavor that often leads to the best science. During his fourteen years at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden I have had the privilege to be a co-investigator on several research projects, as well as co-instructor of undergraduate and graduate courses in plant anatomy. He has inspired many during these fourteen years; docents, high-school students, garden colleagues, graduate students desiring to learn anatomical techniques and all who asked were welcomed and given time and encouragement.
