Evolution and Diversification in the Sapindales

Kallunki, Jacquelyn A. [1], Groppo, Milton [2].

Phylogenetic analyses of the subtribe Galipeinae (Rutaceae).

Systematic studies have shown that some of the 26 genera in subtribe Galipeinae need to be recircumscribed because they were based on too few specimens or on single characters and, thus, include disparate taxa. Examination of more specimens has allowed better description of many genera and has revealed additional useful characters. Some species assigned to Erythrochiton because of a colored, valvate calyx have been transferred to Toxosiphon and Desmotes based on differences in petal, carpel, testa, and pollen characters. Understanding the characters of Raputia after examination of the type led to the transfer to that genus of species described in four other genera—the resulting genus characterized by opposite leaves, coiled cauline inflorescences, and calyx lobe margins overlapping in flower. Some species described in Galipea were transferred to Angostura—the two genera distinguished by characters of carpels, pollen exine, and trichome type. More work needs to be done: A few species with atypical character states should perhaps be removed from the largest genus, Conchocarpus; the diversity within Ravenia needs to be assessed; and three new species need to be described in the proper genera—old or new. Furthermore, molecular analyses of 59 genera of Rutaceae based on trnL-trnF and rps-16 sequences indicated that the subtribe itself needs to be recircumscribed. Five of the six genera of Galipeinae included in that study formed a strongly supported clade within a larger clade of neotropical members of the family. Adiscanthus, however, paired with Hortia (traditionally assigned to another subfamily), indicating that the Galipeinae is not monophyletic as previously defined. Molecular analyses including more genera of the Galipeinae and morphological analyses of a broader range of characters (e.g., of seed coat, embryo, pollen, and foliar anatomy) are being conducted to determine subtribal and generic limits and to identify characters most useful in generic revisions.
