Population Genetics Levin, Donald A. [1], Meyers, Lauren A. [2]. Why is polyploidy so rampant in flowering plants? Several genetical and ecological explanations have been offered to explain the abundance of polyploids in angiosperms. We propose that polyploids constitute a significant majority of all species because of a simple ratcheting process that is not based on genetic nor ecological advantage. The distributions of ploidal levels within a large number of genera are statistically similar to those generated by a simple model that includes irreversible polyploidy.
