Ferns on Oceanic Islands - From Dispersal to Long Lasting Diversity Moran, Robbin [1], Motley, Timothy J. [2], Rouhan, G. [3]. Phylogeny, origin, and diversification of Elaphoglossum (Dryopteridaceae) on oceanic islands. Elaphoglossum, one of the world’s largest fern genera, is well represented on oceanic islands. We review its occurrence on oceanic islands worldwide, and for the islands of Hawaii, St. Helena, Rapa, and the Marquesas, we present preliminary evidence about the number of separate introductions and species radiations that have formed monophyletic, endemic clades. Hawaii harbors 9 species—the most of any archipelago—8 of which are endemic. These species appear to have originated from four separate dispersal events, with one lineage radiating into six endemic species, called the “alatum group.” The alatum group is sister to the species of sect. Elaphoglossum. St. Helena has three species of Elaphoglossum sect. Lepidoglossa, all endemic, and they form a monophyletic group nested within a neotropical clade called the “ciliatum group.” Two species of Elaphoglossum sect. Setosa occur on Rapa, and these are related to a neotropical clade. The Marquesas contain three endemic species, two of which are sister species in a neotropical clade within sect. Elaphoglossum subsect. Pachyglossa. The third species belongs to sect. Lepidoglossa and thus represents a separate introduction. Based on present sampling, many species of the Pacific and southern Atlantic archipelagos appear to have originated from the Neotropics. This conclusion is preliminary because more Asian species of the genus need to be included in the analysis. Log in to add this item to your schedule
